Travel Photography: Where To Go in October

October is a month of contrasts. Some mornings greet us with sunshine, while others are gloomy and damp. But it’s precisely this variability that gives October its charm. After the hustle and bustle of summer, the world quiets down, the landscape is wrapped in fog, and the crowds of European tourists disappear. And outside of Europe? In North America, it’s the last chance to savor the great outdoors before winter settles in. Elsewhere, a new season begins after the rainy months. So where should you head for your October travels?
If you’re not a fan of autumn gloom and prefer the fresh colors of spring, head to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where you can enjoy pleasant daytime temperatures and only occasional rain. Spring is in full swing in October. California is another great escape from gray skies. Yosemite National Park will literally take your breath away. But don’t be fooled by the California sun; pack plenty of warm layers for the mountains.
There’s still time to enjoy mountain adventures in Europe, too. Like the Durmitor National Park in Montenegro. The higher elevations will likely already be blanketed in snow, but the valleys are perfect for exploring with your camera. Another enchanting destination is Taiwan. The vibrant metropolis of Taipei is a dream come true for any street photographer. And of course, the Czech Republic offers countless opportunities for October photography. This time, we’re heading to the magical Adršpach-Teplice Rocks.

1. Buenos Aires, Argentina

When it’s autumn in Europe, it’s spring in Buenos Aires. What matters most is that this season is perfect for photography and wandering around the city. Locals embrace their springtime October and spend lots of time in parks, cafes, and out on the streets. When it comes to Buenos Aires, I prefer not to list specific places you should visit. The best way to experience the city is simply to grab your camera and start walking around. If you’re interested in history and architecture, explore neighborhoods like San Telmo, La Boca, or Recoleta. For soaking up the atmosphere and people-watching, head to neighborhoods like Palermo Soho, Villa Crespo, or Caballito.

Buenos Aires is often referred to as the most European city in South America. Over half of its residents have Italian roots, and the architecture carries the same grandeur as the boulevards of Paris or Madrid. Buenos Aires is also one of the safest cities in South America, but it’s still wise to keep an eye on your camera and other valuables.

While Buenos Aires may resemble Europe in many ways, its bold colors are unmistakably South American. The most colorful part of the city is the famous Caminito Street, though be prepared for large crowds of tourists.
2. Yosemite National Park (USA)

While winter has already arrived in many North American national parks, Yosemite remains accessible in October, with plenty of sunshine at lower elevations. Be prepared, however, for cold nights and the possibility of snow at higher elevations.

The autumn sun gives Yosemite a unique atmosphere, which is why Ansel Adams loved it so much. In October, the sun is softer than in summer, and its rays reflect beautifully off the pale granite and ever-present sand. Adams spent weeks here, taking many iconic photographs and drawing attention to the park’s exceptional beauty and the importance of its conservation.
3. Durmitor National Park, Montenegro

In October, you probably won’t be climbing Durmitor’s highest peaks. But that’s fine because the valleys offer plenty of photographic opportunities. In addition to breathtaking views, you can still catch glimpses of traditional shepherding life, which is slowly disappearing. Every shot feels meaningful here.

If it’s too cold for you in Durmitor, head a few hundred kilometers south to Lake Skadar or one of Montenegro’s famous coastal towns such as Kotor, Budva, or Bar.
4. Taipei, Taiwan

Although Taipei is not as well-known as Tokyo or Seoul, it offers a fascinating blend of both cities—just without the crowds. You can find everything from Taoist temples to striking skyscrapers, luxury malls, and vibrant night markets under neon lights. Taipei is synonymous with diversity and vibrance. In late October, the rainy season ends, humidity drops, and the skies are clear. It’s the perfect time for photographers to explore this dynamic city.

For adventurous and athletic travelers, there’s the option to rent a bike and cycle around the entire island in about two weeks. Taiwan boasts excellent cycling infrastructure, including a bike path that circles the island’s perimeter. Bike shops can be found in every city, so you won’t have to worry about any technical issues. From a photographer’s perspective, it’s a unique way to witness everyday life across the island.
5. Adršpach-Teplice Rocks, Czechia

The Adršpach-Teplice rock formations are a popular tourist destination, especially Adršpach. It’s no surprise—they’re truly one of a kind. October is an excellent time to visit for several reasons. First, the number of tourists drops significantly. At the same time, the falling leaves reveal the rock towns in all their glory. Choose a clear October day, head out early, and you have the best chance of enjoying the magic without the crowds.

The sheer rock walls rise dramatically directly in front of you, making them tricky to capture in a single frame. You can try using a wide-angle lens or add a person to the composition to give a sense of scale to these monumental rock formations.
