What Should Be in Your Camera Bag?

We recently offered some advice on how to choose a camera bag. This time, we’ll tell you what ought to be in it besides just a camera. We’ll start from the basics, but we have some surprises for you at the end.

The article is over 5 years old. The information in it may be outdated.

I’ve been taking pictures since 2004. When I was starting out, I photographed almost everything. Later my style solidified and I began photographing people almost exclusively. At the moment my main genres are fashion and advertising.

  1. A survival blanket also makes a good reflector and takes up less space than a folded sheet of A4

  2. How about a Camera, Lens or 2

  3. You forgot a ball of three or four feet of string:
One end attached to the camera, the other end blocked under your foot, just stretch it, and you have got a efficient monopod !

  4. It might have been simpler if you had said, don’t forget your cell phone at home. My cell phone has a compass, can provide a very bright light and can store text and voice data. As for tape, nothing stops duct tape as a universal solutions provider. If duct tape can’t do it, don’t do it. Don’t leave home without it.

  5. A knife, small enough to be allowed in checked baggage.

  6. Spare lens cap(s), small bubble level, resealable plastic bags to organize stuff and provide added protection from rain and dust.

  7. A couple of tubes one time use superglue, they are usually good for a couple of years in storage.

  8. Dictaphone. Aren’t we calling them digital voice recorders now? And +1 on the duct tape vs electrical tape, which is basically worthless in non-electrical applications.

  9. A torch yes, but it should be a head band torch as this allows a free hand for other uses. A ‘Led Lenser’ is best in my opinion; very powerful, good quality but expensive. A see through plastic bag is a useful rain cover in an emergency too. Other items I carry: 1) Business cards, which double as a means of identification if the bag gets left behind, 2) a packet of painkillers! 3) A small selection of sticking plasters, 4) A small packet of Blue Tac,.great for temporarily sticking something in place! 5) Finally, how about a pair of spare socks?!!
